It seems that it was yesterday when I was shooting the continental project of the Alberto Contador Foundation and yet we face what will be the third season in the professional squad. In 2020 the team continues to grow, new sponsors join this exciting journey and many of our supporters, really already friends, continue to support their development. In the new season we will compete as Kometa-Xstra Cycling Team, we are again enrolled in the continental category and we go out to the roads with all the desire in the world to set a great year and give the maximum in high competition. Our fundamental objective, one of the pillars of the very existence of the Foundation, is training. We want to continue training great professional cyclists.
The 2019 reinforces us in this desire, since up to four riders disembarks in the demand of the WorldTour, the maximum category existing in the current cycling. Four riders in the elite. Juan Pedro López and Michel Ries will do it in the Trek-Segafredo, a team with which we have maintained an intense relationship in the last two years as a development training; Stefano Oldani will ride in the Lotto-Soudal; and the young Carlos Rodríguez will stop in the Team Ineos directly from our junior structure. Thirty kids who have passed through at least one of our structures have already achieved professionalism since this project started in 2013 with the youth team. The figure is beginning to give us respect and to ask ourselves if it is possible a greater responsibility.
This 2020 brings with it an additional nuance of great emotional depth, since Juan Pedro López reaches the WorldTour not only after having raced in all our structures (junior, U23, continental), but also after having accessed them through the Campus Selection organized in Zaragoza thanks to the Mafia Sits at the table. In 2020 we have in the elite a boy who persevered to compete with us, because he was not selected at first. It is a great responsibility to feel that little by little we are a team where people want to be.
Sportively our third year in the continental category comes with the main change of the seven new faces that will be incorporated to the Kometa-Xstra team, a renewal of a certain depth in a team of thirteen riders from Denmark, Portugal, Hungary, Italy and Spain.
Of course within the Foundation we maintain the dream of being able to carry out a sports project in a higher category. And we work to achieve it. But it is neither an obsession nor is it an issue that eclipses our true interest in training cyclists, giving them opportunities, helping them in their growth and nurturing, in short, a multidisciplinary project where not only competition, but the bicycle as an educational tool, are the fundamental axes. And even an instrument to change the world, as also shown by such a beautiful project for Bicis para la Vida by ŠKODA.
Let’s get started!
